Toronto’s the Archives drop their latest EP Transitions November 10, but it already arrived in my inbox with promises of Brand New and Manchester Orchestra comparisons. And while it took a couple listens, the six-track album does truthfully ignite that ferrous Long Island feel with amped-up melodic rock, dark undertones and slashes of spite.

City of Light, the latest offering from Toronto alt-country act The Wooden Sky, continues the story of longing and lust, painted out through five tracks detailing the rolling nostalgia of feeling lost in a lonely city. Picking up where the shining sophomore release If I Don’t Come Home You Know I’m Gone left off, this EP is designed to tide us over until the third installment drops early next year. And it’s a gorgeous album, but one that echoes a looming sadness suggested before.

Five nights of messy battles, but Tiny Danza reigns supreme!

It was a struggle dragging our tired, hungover bodies to Tattoo Rock Parlour for one last night of rock’n’roll, but worth every sleepy drunk yawn when champion performers Tiny Danza took the stage. Crowned the kings of Indie Week 2011 (or what we like to call the Queen St. W Battle of the Bands), Toronto’s own TD won the judges over with their bluesy fusion of hip hop and jazz. The energetic group wrecked dance havoc on the stage and helped pave the way for the resurgence of layered, dramatic soul with dynamite pop sensibilities. These fly guys pair style and pizazz with likely classical training and Kanye West attitude. This is what turns heads people – check these guys out ASAP!

Montreal’s Young Galaxy has released their latest video for “Phantoms” just in time for Halloween. Their latest single off 2011’s Polaris Nominated album Shapeshifting features two sheet-clad ghosts on a journey through the night. It is filmed rather beautifully. Six Shooter Records presents Lonesome Heroes, a new Tuesday night series highlighting the sheer force of emerging talent in Canada’s singer-songwriter community. Lonesome Heroes will feature artists in workshop-style performances, showcasing songcraft and fostering artistic development, held at Toronto’s Lula Lounge.
The 6-week songwriter circle series runs from November 8 to December 13, 2011. Tickets are $10 advance, available at www.sixshooterrecords.com and at Lula Lounge. All shows start at 9pm. Doors at 8pm.
Lula Lounge is located at 1585 Dundas St. W., Toronto.
