Toronto’s most dangerous rock band Die Mannequin treated fans with an early show at Tattoo Rock Parlor Friday night that was free to the first 200 people.  Coming off the heels of an Ontario/Quebec tour and joined by local bands Darlings of Chelsea and Dearly Beloved, die-hards and casual fans alike could not have asked for a better homecoming show.

Live Review: Busking For Change @ Much Music and Union Station

It was a perfect way to end the summer: a beautiful sunny day in the downtown core with over 50 musicians playing on street corners helping to raise money for a good cause. War Child put on its third annual music festival yesterday on International Peace Day in locations across Toronto in an effort to help children worldwide affected by war.

Part II: Polaris Music Prize Gala empowers with brilliant performances

As a huge advocate for the nominated Nice, Nice, Very Nice, I was slightly disappointed by Dan Mangan’s performance as he did not choose to play the songs that really emphasize his greatness and unique voice as a musician, such as “Road Regrets.”  This did not prevent him from winning over the crowd and convincing everyone to clap along and sing, “Robots need love too,” which was quirky and kind of fun, something he described himself as seeming “silly.”  He did prove himself as live performer, which will undoubtedly be noted and contribute to future success.

Part I: Karkwa wins big and other stories from the Polaris Music Prize Gala

Quebec Band Karkwa wins Polaris Music Prize Masonic Temple, Toronto, ON

Quebec’s Karkwa took home the $20,000 Polaris Music Prize last night for their album Les Chemins De Verre much to the surprise of the predominately English music media attending the event, but this isn’t to say the award was not well deserved.  In only two songs the band captured the audience with their enigmatic performance despite singing entirely in French, and their cute acceptance speech won them a couple bonus points as well.

The Birthday Massacre ended their North American CD release tour on a high note with a homecoming show at the Mod Club on September 16 in support of their new album Pins and Needles. Toronto’s Goth community came out of hiding still without a solid place to call home, which makes shows like this that much more appealing.
