I had never given much thought to volcanoes in Canada until the international level of natural disasters occurring as of late. Canada is home to almost every kind of volcano, primarily situated on the west coast. Luckily, Canada’s volcanoes have remained relatively dormant. Not so dormant, however, are Saskatchewan rockers Volcanoless in Canada who have been touring the country en route to NXNE. Guitarist Levi Soulodre tells us more.
We are on this planet, Earth. We are doing well considering we’re still able to play music together.
2. There are a lot of bands playing NXNE, why should we watch yours?
The lineup is fantastic and our showcase night features some great groups too! People always seem to leave a Volcanoless show happier and zippier, as we love to have a great time.
3. What are you doing to prepare for NXNE?
Work a whole bunch of shitty minimum wage jobs so we can party all week in Toronto, and play some shows along the way! Spring cleaning, and have a massive garage sale also that’s been put off for the past two years.
4. What are you hoping to get out of the festival?
I hope my uncle Claude and aunt Rebecca show up to our show, because we forgot to contact them at our last TO performance at the Horseshoe in September. They’re the raddest, and they might treat us at the Lahore Tikka House mmm!
5. Which act(s) are you hoping to catch during the festival and why?
Everyone has their own unique show wish list, but we’ll all probably be attending Japandroids together, because they’re awe-inspiring. We’re stoked for all the bands on our NxEW (North by East West showcase) too – a Horse and his Boy, Rock Plaza Central, Olenka & the Autumn Lovers, the Coast, Amos the Transparent and I’ve never of the Mountains and the Trees, but it’s a great band name. An organic, earthy showcase theme if anything! If there’s any possible chance we can witness the glory that is the Stooges, we’ll be getting spit on by Iggy. Les Savy Fav, Warpaint blows my mind, HEALTH, Wavves… too many!
6. Tell me a tour story that is crazy but true.
Two years ago, we drove straight from Saskatoon to St. Catharines to play a small Irish pub during S.C.E.N.E. festival with no P.A. or monitors, had a pint then promptly jumped back in our 4×4 GMC diesel truck and returned home. The show was fun, but everything else is blurry – the 60-hour round drive was bananas. Mitch almost died on the way home from dehydration/exhaustion/food poisoning.
7. What are VIC working on at the moment?
"AH HA HA HA Stayin’ Alive, Stayin’ Aliveeeee". And writing new songs.
8. Which shows/events/BBQs are you playing?
We’re happy to be performing at the tongue-twisting North by East West North by North East showcase Thursday June 17th at 8 p.m. at the lovely Gladstone Ballroom. First on, don’t miss out!
9. Where can we find out more about you?
Stop us on the street when you see us in TO, or check out www.volcanolessincanada.com and follow the paths.
10. Any last parting words for us music-hungry Toronto folk?
How can they be parting when we’re arriving!? I hope to catch Mr. Owen Pallett somewhere and congratulate him on making one of the best records this year.
Thank You! Love Music!
