NXNE Preview: Doll

Ottawa Band Doll By: TJ Liebgott
June 7, 2010

For most people, grunge died with Kurt Cobain in the early 90’s.  Ottawa band Doll, however, has not given up on the genre.  Staying true to their roots, Doll plays real grunge in the vain of bands like L7, not the water downed corporate version heard in Cameron Crowe’s 1992 movie "Singles." Vocalist/guitarist Christina Kasper tells us more.

1. How are you doing and where are you right now?

Doll has been doing great. We just came back to Ottawa from a great mini tour with Lacuna Coil, which was an amazing success, made tons of new friends. 2010 is definitely the year of the Doll.

2. There are a lot of bands playing NXNE, why should we watch yours?

We’ve been known for our amped up high energy stage shows. If you’re in the mood to let loose and have an amazing time, then our show is for you!

We are not the flavour of the week.  Our songs are honest, powerful, raw emotion, in-your-face rock.  One taste and you’ll want more.

3. What are you doing to prepare for NXNE?

We’ve been playing extensively around Ontario and Quebec preparing our set and building our fanbase, writing new songs and really working hard at providing the Doll experience in our live performance. And we’re eating our mini wheats to be in full force for the show.

4. What are you hoping to get out of the festival?

More exposure and building good contacts, and most importantly building our fanbase. A hot dog would also be good.

5. Which act(s) are you hoping to catch during the festival and why?

Mudhoney – one of the best grunge bands out there. They don’t play Canada regularly, so this is a must.

The Icarus Line – Crazy stage show!

Iggy Pop – Cold Metal! We’ve grown up listening to Iggy Pop, so it will be a real treat to see him live finally.

6. Tell me a tour story that is crazy but true.

On the Inside The Dollhouse tour, in Quebec City at the climax of the show, the crowd was going so nuts, stage diving and dancing up a storm, we fed off that energy and during our last song, our drummer Nick jumped from behind the drums and his crash cymbal lands on the back of Christina’s head. There was blood everywhere and she could have died. The ambulance came and she was rushed to the hospital to get stitches.

7. What are Doll working on at the moment?

We are working on new material for the second album.
8. Which shows/events/BBQs are you playing?

We are playing The Shop on Thursday June 17th at 1 a.m.

9. Where can we find out more about you?

The best source of Doll news is our MySpace and our Facebook page.

10. Any last parting words for us music-hungry Toronto folk?

You’ve seen DOLL at the Sound Academy, the Opera House, Lee’s Palace and the Mod Club… now it’s time to see us at NXNE!
