Toronto’s Kate Rogers spent the better part of eight years in the United Kingdom before returning to share her music with our native land. Her vocals are soulful and mature, igniting a sense of mystery and charm. She has performed alongside indie rockers the Coast and now has a solid six-piece lineup of her own. The band is gearing up for the release of their new album Gadabout, due June 22. Kate Rogers tells us more.
I’m happy to say that I’m on my couch, taking a breather after an amazing long weekend. Is that wrong to admit?
2. There are a lot of bands playing NXNE, why should we watch yours?
Ouch. That’s definitely a tough one. I mean, I’m supposed to say that we’re some seriously hot shit up there and you really don’t want to miss us, but actually, I think you should come watch ours because it’s my birthday.
3. What are you doing to prepare for NXNE?
Everything I possibly can! We’re also releasing an EP the week after the festival so we are gonna be rehearsing and promoting our butts off til’ then.
4. What are you hoping to get out of the festival?
I think I’m most excited about the fact that we are playing the CBC Radio 2 stage, because they are recording and broadcasting the show afterwards. It’s like multiple showcases in one! Of course, that’s when I hope I don’t royally screw up on national radio…then I’ll have to relive it.
5. Which act(s) are you hoping to catch during the festival and why?
It’s so hard because so many of the acts that I want to see are all playing on the same nights! Would have loved to have caught the NxEW showcase and the Six Shooter showcase too, but both are on the same night as the CBC one. Damn.
6. Tell me a tour story that is crazy but true.
Hmmm…the crap thing is I can’t really tell you the good ones or my band will kick my ass!
7. What are you working on at the moment?
Being productive. Apparently the heat has broken my momentum. Otherwise I’m trying to get this next album written!
8. Which shows/events/BBQs are you playing?
We are playing the CBC Radio 2 showcase at the Rivoli, June 17, along with (sweet lineup) Zeus, Buck 65, Grand Analog and Chris Velan – I’m lucky to have a ticket!
9. Where can we find out more about you?
10. Any last parting words for us music-hungry Toronto folk?
Homegrown support feels good. Really good. Try it! June 17 is going to be the best night of NXNE. We’re gonna make 1 a.m. worth every second of it. Seriously. Yeah, we are. 😉
