The Beatles meets The Ramones: a dirty vintage sound complimented by cadenced arcs (and without the self-conscious grind of intentional rawness), Young Rival has found a way to make good old rock n’ roll their own.

The past year has seen the release of their third album, a self-titled EP under their new name, followed by a three-month tour across North America. Now back in Hamilton focusing on local shows while their day jobs catch up to them, the members of Young Rival have time to reflect on their identity as a band.

You Say Party! We Say Die! Ticket giveaway contest

We Say Die!, Think About Life and Little Girls along with DJ Vaneska on the 1’s and 2’s.  The show’s going down on November 20 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, 410 Sherbourne St.  Doors at 9 p.m.  All you have to do is tell us a story about why you should have these tickets.  At $12 a pop, we accept stories of brokeness, but make them creative!  Email first and last name along with your story to contests@torontomusicscene.ca . I don’t know what I was expecting coming into the show, but it certainly wasn’t the sonic beat down I ended up receiving. I figured the Fucked Up weekend was simply a thinly veiled encouragement for everyone to consume copious amounts of alcohol and/or illegal substances over the course of the music festival. A silly lapse of judgment on my part, in that my face actually melted upon exposure to the bands playing that night.

Deadline for SXSW submissions this Friday

South By Southwest ApplicationToronto bands looking to apply to showcase at the 2010 South By Southwest Music conference in Austin, Texas need to do so by midnight on Friday November 6.  The festival will be running March 17-21 and encourages Toronto bands to apply through Sonicbids.  Unfortunately there is a $40 application fee, but the fee also gives bands a six-month membership trial to Sonicbids.  Last year’s Toronto performers included Sebastien Grainger, Emma-Lee, The D’Urbervilles, the Mark Inside, Magneta Lane and more.
