EP Review: Beekeeper’s Society – First Year Film School

The first thing that caught my eye about Beekeeper’s Society’s First Year Film School EP was the heart they put into their packaging.  Four tracks found themselves blanketed in light cardboard printed in a newsprint fashion, a bio set up like a newspaper article with four individual copies of Polaroids printed with the lyrics.  The bio describes how this EP came together like the processing of black room photography and it strikes me just how much this band cares about the craft of their music.

CD Review: Beth in Battle Mode – Hot Science

Beth in Battle Mode has become a mandatory part of my Friday night pre-drink playlists, and they’ve really upped the ante (pre-drink count) with their sophomore release, Hot Science.  While they maintain consistency with the catchy indie electropop dance music they’ve become synonymous with, they’ve spiced Hot Science up with the explosive addition of heavier synths, darker choruses and a level of energy normally reserved for their live shows.

Cancer Bats destroy Taste of Chaos

Hardcore/screamo bands Four Year Strong, Pierce The Vail, Cancer Bats, Bring Me The Horizon and Thursday took over the Kool Haus for the early, all-ages show last week as part of the Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour.  Unfortunately for most of the show, the sound was overly muddy and drenched in the room’s natural reverb, proving that the Kool Haus may be better suited for the club scene than as a live music venue.
