XM Canada radio has just announced it’s first-ever Verge Music Awards and a bunch of our favourite Toronto artists have been nominated.

There are two categories: Album of the Year and Artist of the Year.  The winners will be announced at Tattoo Rock Parlour in September and will be awarded $50,000 in prizes.

All winners will be determined through online voting via the Verge website at http://www.thevergexm52.com/musicawards .  Members of the XM Satellite Radio music-programming department will serve as a panel to select the winner of the top nominations based on artist integrity.

Some bands who are up for nominations have been featured on TorontoMusicScene.ca including: Sweet Thing, the Coast, Arkells, Attack in Black, Birds of Wales, Constantines, the Reason, the Saint Alvia Cartel and Zuku, to name a few.

The ceremony will be held on September 28, 2008 at Tattoo Rock Parlour begins at 9 P.M. and will be broadcast live on the Verge, channel 52.

"This is an exceptional way to honour and promote Canada's bands and artists," said Stewart Lyons, executive vice president of XM Canada in the issued press release. "XM Canada is committed to developing emerging Canadian talent and acknowledging those that make significant contributions to the Canadian music scene, at home and abroad. We believe that awarding the musicians with $50,000 will go a long way to help our home-grown talent reach the forefront of the international music scene."

Toronto Music Scene encouraged everyone to vote for your favourite Toronto bands.  This city has a wicked scene that deserves as much recognition as possible.
