DJ Baby Yu
Hip Hop / R&B / Reggae
Baby Yu is one of Canada’s most experienced, well-respected and well-connected DJs. When the biggest names in the music biz come to town…you can bet that Baby Yu will be on the 1’s and 2’s. From ballers like Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson to Hip Hop royalty like Ludacris, Nas and Jay-Z to princesses of R&B such as Rihanna, Mya and Fergie, Baby Yu is the choice for spinning at the hottest parties in town.
Over the years, he has been at the top of the nightclub scene in Toronto, holding down weekly residencies at two of Canada’s largest nightclubs: The Guvernment (Friday audiences of +2,000) and The Docks (Saturday audiences of +2,000). Along the way, he has played at every other major venue in the city, including in front of 1,000,000 revellers along Toronto’s Lakeshore every year since 2001 for the Caribana Parade.
When Baby Yu is not moving crowds in Toronto’s hottest night spots, he’s on the road with his MC, RG, at some of Canada’s other top venues or touring and opening up on major tours for recording artists such as Sean Paul, Snoop Dogg and The Game. He has travelled extensively across the United States, and has been booked for gigs all over Europe and Asia.
Baby Yu is well-known for his unique dub plate mixes of a capellas over hot beats, and his ability to blend classic soul tracks with Hip Hop bangers of today in a way that educates and entertains!
He has produced a series of mix tapes hosted by a whos who of urban stars, such as Chingy, The Game, Kanye West, Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri, Fabolous, Christina Milian, Obie Trice, Ciara, Tony Yayo and the list goes on. He is currently working on projects with artists such as Jazzy Jeff, Will Smith, Nas, Rakim, and Mobb Deep. Baby Yu was personally requested to DJ for Jazzy Jeff at his 40th birthday party in Philadelphia in January 2005.
From age 12, Baby Yu was obsessed with collecting music. Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Jodeci and Bell Biv Devoe were some of his favourites growing up. For as long as he can remember, Baby Yu was the go-to-guy for local house parties. At house parties in his adolescent years, he was the one to select the music and get the boom box to make the party shake. In his late teens when he became a professional DJ, Baby Yu got his moniker from his close friends due to his baby-faced appearance combined with his Japanese name, Yuta.
His talent and drive has led him to guest appearances on many nation wide television and radio programs across Canada and the US. In addition to hosting “The DJ Baby Yu and MC RG Show” on two commercial stations in Toronto from 2002-2003 (FLOW 93.5 and KISS 92-5), he has appeared on major market radio in markets such as Vancouver (The Beat 94.5 FM), Edmonton (91.7 THE BOUNCE) and Detroit (WJLB 98 FM). He currently holds down the Metro Mix on XM Satellite Radio out of Washington, DC, and Violator All-Star Radio Uncut/The League Crew Radio on Sirius Radio. His love for radio has ventured him towards his own syndicated show called REMIX RADIO which is aired in various countries such as Germany (BlackJam-Radio.com) and Canada.
In 2003, DJ Baby Yu took home the Canadian Urban Pool Award for “Flavor Pool DJ of the Year.” He was also a nominee for “Rookie of the Year” (2004), “Best Canadian Mixtape DJ” (2006) for the internationally-renowned Justo Mixtape Awards. In 2006, He was voted Best Urban Club DJ for the 1st Annual Toronto DJ Festival. Recently, at the 2007 Stylus DJ Awards he was awarded “Toronto DJ of the Year”, and “Club DJ of the Year in Canada”.
In September 2005 he was recruited to be the newest member of the Violator All-Star DJs, a dedicated and talented team started by Violator Management President Chris Lighty to make the working relationship between artists and DJs more efficient and streamlined. Baby Yu is the first Canadian to be invited to be a member of this DJ coalition.
For the past four years, Baby Yu has utilized his web sites (www.babyyu.com and www.babyyumixtapes.com) to connect with his audience and to market his services. The sites have generated significant booking requests and fan mail from the world all over.
DJ Baby Yu is a force to be reckoned with in the global music scene, and is the man to call when you want a happy crowd of party-goers – guaranteed!
